Conference Prep and Fun Pillows

Made up some conference notebooks for the YW. We are having a conference Jeoprady after conference and I wanted to help prepare them for the fun.

I have made quite a few of these fun and fast pillow tops from Charm packs. This one is for Heidi - she is moving away from me....so sad. But I want to her know she is taking a piece of our heart with her (that is represented by the one bright red square in the pillow but it is also trimmed in red because love never ends it is one of the few things we can take with us where ever we go)

Ma Z's Zoo

This is such a fun, dear quilt. The blocks for this were made by my wonderful quilting bee friends. I sent out the torquoise alphabet and animal fabric and requested wonky logs. It is so fun to see all the fun prints and wonkyness that they sent back.

Wedded Bliss

I've had quite a few wedding showers to go to lately for special YW in my life.
Here is what I have been making for these sweet girls entering into "Wedded Bliss"

I love this fun pattern using a charm pack. It is called City Windows (I think I found it on Moda Bake shop) I like changing up the backing tho - so I can use the extra charm squares for another quilt instead of using them all from the charm pack for one table topper.

Blockhead!!

It is finished and quilted!!
Now with the quilting done I have renamed the quilt (thanks to DH suggestion) to BLOCKHEADS! This is quilted with a fun puzzle pattern but it also looks like little heads popping out of the boxes.

This is flannel and backed with a fuzzy back so it is fun to cuddle up with and enjoy. I took it to camp for a great quilt perfect for using in the wild.

Stars & Stripes

Another Finish!!! I made this top quite some time ago but did not get it quilted. It was used for a patriotic party once and got dirty so it had to be washed before it even got quilted but now it is done and useable for REAL!

It feels like a fun patriotic party when we spread this out. I think I would actually enjoy doing another quilt like this but I would keep the woven bands in two different color ways instead of mixing it up like I did. Fortunately this one is mixed up because I totally mixed up a couple of blocks and got their stripes mixed up but you hardly can tell....just try to find my big mistake.

I enjoy backs with a touch of fun and quilting filled with starts. Appropriate for the stars and stripes!

Dot to Dot

It is blogger's quilt festival again. I love looking at all the great quilts and stories behind them.

Here is mine to share:

When I first started thinking of a quilt for my daughter Michelle, I wanted to do something with Circles kind of a M &M's thing. Just in time, I noticed a fun quilt pattern in my quilting magazine (I wish I could link to the correct one. Sorry, I tried to find which one it was American Patchwork and Quilting 2009 probably Nov or Dec - at least the last part of the year). It had a circle on every block which was a bit much for my simpler taste but being the "maker" of the quilt, I realized I could change it up any way I wanted. So "Dot to Dot" is my version. Still filled with lots of wonderful dots (I love the dot fabric) and just a smattering of appliqued dots to make it fun!!
I hope they get lots of use and fun out of this Picnic quilt and many, many happy memories.

So what have I learned......
I LOVE dots!!
But I also learned I can venture out and make things my own way. What I see can inspire me but simplify and or change to suit me!!!

Yipee, hooray I got a quilt top quilted and bound.
I have had this top waiting since 2009 to get done and I did it!!!

It is called "Mud Block Madness"
Now don't you think all those little blocks are truly madness?

I also got my rail fence flannel plaid one bordered. Now it's ready to quilt as soon as I figure out the backing.

Table Topper - fun gifts.

Recently I made some table toppers for gifts. I really like how they turned out.

Looks like I forgot to take a picture of the one I gave in our RS traveling purse.
So sad :( I guess I will just have to make another one. (Maybe I could keep one for me - it was so cute!!)

Mud Block Madness

I am trying to get some finishes done and quilted. I realize when I actually counted it that I have over 50 quilt tops in various stages but very few finished and actually done in to a quilt with it's quilting done.

I love how all the colors blend so well yet pop out of the brown background.

If you look closely at the lable you can see that the quilt was prepared in Jan of 2009 but it was finally finished ans quilted in April of 2011. It is really a needed thing to hunker down and get all the quilting done and finished so we can enjoy and USE these quilts!! It is now all quilted (with a nice meandering stitch), bound and we are now enjoying it!! Yipee!

Hibernating....

So I have been hibernating in the blogging world. No I did not disappear from the face of the earth. I just have not been recording what I have been doing. :( No I have not stopped quilting either but true I have not done as much. My life has been really busy with other things but I have still eeked out a few moments for sewing on my quilts.

So I am going to get on the ball and post some of the latest:
(be warned...I probably should have broken this up into many individual posts but I was to anxious and did them all at once, so it is a bit long)

Starting with Ma Z's Zoo! This was a fun one from my online "Sew Kid st Heart 2" quilting bee.

When it was my turn, I sent out some strips of animal and animal alphabet fabric (pictured)

along with one fussy cut animal to my quilting friends and they made me a mod and crazy log cabin quilt using some of their stash. I love the zoo of fun that I ended up with. Can't wait to get this quilted and used.

It is so fun to look at all the fun animals in the zoo!!! I think some grandbaby is going to get lots of fun out of looking for all the wonderful animals!!

Springtime Symphony....this is one I made about a year ago but I finally got it quilted. This is a quilt for Jenelle and her future baby.

There really is quite a story with this quilt. The fabric for the main part was got at two totally different times with no thought of each other. Once at Joann's I could not resist a fat quarter stack of 5 fabrics with no idea of how I would use them - I just loved the colors. Basically the same pattern but in different colors Green, Yellow, Blue, Purple & Red. The fabric with the dots was got from Walmart for another project (the camp "In Tune" bags I made back in 2009) Sometime after making the bags, I noticed that my leftover scraps just matched the colors in my fat quarter packet. Then I got excited because I knew exactly what pattern I wanted to use. It was a booklet I had bought and only had done the table runner from it but when I bought it, the pattern I really wanted to make was "double-time duet". Now was my opportunity!!!

After I got the center part done, I struggled with how to border it - more of the plain white or what? When Aunt J and I were out shopping at 3 Dude's Quilting I bought a charm pack for a new fabric line called "Clementine by Me and My Sister". When I came home I noticed how the flower swatchs were so perfect with the colors from the duet quilt so it was back to the store to get just enough fabric to border the edge of the quilt...perfect. When I went to Jaimes to quilt she had just finished quilting with orange thread - how fun I love how the orange is so perfect and we found a wonderful flower pattern to quilt it with. And the final perfect touch is the purple border that Jenelle chose for the binding!!

Springtime Symphony back (using more of the rainbow fabric from Aunt Janel's wedding.)

Road Trip #1....I got this really fun car fabric and thought of Kathryn's boys and their car bed that needed a great quilt to go with it. This is the first one made (probably for Porter) I still need to add borders and quilt but it is coming.

Road Trip #2....this one is the second using some of the same car fabric line (probably for Mason). While I liked Road trip #1 - I wanted more of a "road" feel, so I decided to do a bargello quilt for the 2nd one. I like it better though I wish I would have continued going up at the end after that first bottom spike, oh well... I LOVE how fast bargello quilts are - so easy, so dramatic and so fun!!!

Last but not least this is another finish. This one is called "Panache in Check". I made this for my display wall to hang because I loved the Moda's fabric line of Panache by Sanae it is so fun fresh and modern but matches all my colors in my house but I could only afford to get one charm pack to enjoy & play with so I added a green check and other stash to make this quilt.

I simply quilted this one with straight lines with my sewing machine - just to get it done!!!

Love Blooms - Again

Whoo....hoo.....it is another quilt festival.....
Since #1 this quilt festival is right during our anniversary, #2 it is just getting cold enough here to put on this warmer quilt on my bed, so it is on my mind and #3 one of my daughters just got engaged....I am thinking about love and this my "Love Blooms" quilt. This is what I made 2 years ago for our 30th anniverary.

Happy Anniversary!!!

We went out-of-town for the weekend before, so on Monday (our actually anniversary day) I had a free day, that of course I didn't want to do anything I usually do and especially not any housework. So I escaped to make us a quilt for our bed. I had recently purchase a small jelly roll of strips in fun colors that I couldn't resist. I looked around in my stash and found a sparkly maroon that I liked with it and I was off. I really didn't have a pattern in mind but just started making block. I took 8 1/2" block out of the maroon and sewed the strips to the outside. After I got all those sewed the next step was to figure out how I was going to place them, straight or on point and what in between. I decided for simple and straight with just a plain block of dark green (from a bolt I had from a possible upholstery project. And I was going to town. I got a lot of it done. In the next few days I just had to pick out my favorite 4 prints to buy and add for borders and then off to Jaime's to quilt it with a wonderful flower stitch, going along with my love blooms quilt.

Lesson learned:
Love does bloom just like quilts. Sometimes we don't know exactly what we will get or end up with. We make a decision, choose our mate then we just jump in whole-heartedly. We make decisions as we go, keep working and working and working. Giving our all and doing the best with what we have. Bordering it all with lots of love, adding a little spice & sparkle or highlighting the favorite parts here and there. Behold we look back at the whole picture after 30 years of love and hard work and say WOW! Look what we have done and look at where and how our love has bloomed!!

#5 Dot to Dot

#6 Turtle Crossing

This is the fourth quilt in the series of quilts made for the downstairs girls room. I originally got the pattern we used from a friend in the ward. We have used the same fabric and the same pattern each time and just mixed up the denim color placement each time (see Michelle's Magic on page 6). The plaid material was given to us by a friend. This one was made for my daughter that loves Turtles so I quilted it with turtles crossing all over it.

I did it - I published (OK - just for me and my family) my "Quilt with Love...Lessons learned" quilt book. I have been wanting to document all my quilt I have made and given. Explain a bit about the process and the lessons I have learned while making each quilt. I finally gathered everything and published it. It is so nice to have this first volume in hand.

It's fun to look at and remember all the quilts I have made. Most of these I have given away to others, so it is nice to remember.

I already have enough quilts tops (OK, ok they are not quilted yet) to do the next book. I need to get busy quilting!!

#2 Fruit Salad

I was shopping and saw a fabric that made me think of Nikaela. I loved this fun fruity print. I bought a small amount and set about to make a fun picnic quilt for Ammon and Nikaela. I was able to pull from my stash everything but the green with pink dots fabric. I had The green denim, and the other fun fabrics and thought a bargello quilt would be the perfect (and quick) was to put together a picnic quilt. When I was done is so reminded me of the yummy layered fruit salad that Nikaela made for us at a girls retreat. (the one at Camille's). Thus the quilts name was born.

So what have I learned...... memories are special and they creep into our lives from everywhere. A piece of fabric or even the look and placement of a pattern.

Bloggers Quilt Festival - My Entry!!

Amy is once again running her Online blogger's quilt festival. If you have never seen this, you ought to block out several hours over the next few days and sit down and check out all the great work. ORANGE BLOSSOM JOYZ
This is my entry.....

This fun little quilt was all (OK just the inside) from scraps. It was all the little leftover pieces from the quilt "Kimree's Krumbs" and leftover scraps from a white sheets I have used in the past. I did plan it from the beginning though. While I cut out the pieces for "Kimree's Krumbs" I noticed I had leftovers in small short (about 8") strips of 2 1/2" wide, so I decided to use those stripes with my leftover sheet scraps (many which also happened to be 2 1/2 inches wide too) and make 9 patch blocks. I LOVE 9 patch block with white and color. It makes them so bright and fun. I love the magic made by just placing them in diagonal rows instead of straight and adding a white block in between each 9 patch.

What I have learned.......
Every little bit counts....every little bit adds....when you add it all together....WOW. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. "We may not have it all together but, TOGETHER we have it ALL!
If we each stand alone, we are OK but can get lost and looked over easy but when we unite ourselves together....
..watch out world;
we become magnificent!"

When I got this quilt top done, My DH named it. He thought it looked like an "orange blossom special", I tweaked that just a bit and named it the "Orange Blossom Joyz" both for who it was made for and it is so happy and joyful with that bright fun orange. This quilt is backed with soft fuzzy orange just great for cuddling and quilted with blossoms to match the "orange" blossoms on the border.

Copycat and Expanding

I saw a great tutorial here, teaching a fun quick way to use turnover packs. I loved it, I even had the exact turnover pack already so I copied them and their idea.

Here it is so far. Still needs a border and quilting but I love it. So much so that I decided to make another with another turnover pack that I had. Funny enough my other turnover pack I already had was exactly the one they demonstrated on, oh no - copy cat again???

Here is the next one which is currently on my design wall.
This is a work in progress, I am branching out an expanding just a bit, because I used tutorial to put together my blocks but I am laying them out in my own way. As you can see I am planning on sashing the blocks with cornerstones. Using one turnover pack, you can make exactly 10 blocks, so I chose to use them all. This quilt will be 3 blocks across and 4 rows down. That left me with 2 empty spaces to fill.

The blocks made me think of fun flowers. So I decided to add a yoyo in the center and a button to help you really think flower.

I decided to fill the empty spots with some favorite flower quotes:

Concentrate on the flowers of life and not the thorns.
We should savor the smell and beauty of both
the rose and cactus.

The other quote is by Abraham Lincoln and will say:
All my life I have tried to pluck a thistle
and plant a flower,
wherever the flower would grow
in thought and mind.

Quilting Bee Blocks

I have had a chance to try some new things this month in my quilting bees.
I have stayed away for the most part from too many 1/2 square triangle and this block has a zillion of them. (OK that's a big exaggeration but it has lots of small triangle) Actually this block, I hate to admit is from February, Not March. Yes I am late but at least I got it finally done. (Last month was a bit overwhelming for me with the 4 youngest kids in a play - tech week then 2 weeks of late night performances, sewing 10 dresses for the play, a son doing an Eagle project that HAD to be done this month, getting his Eagle application and paperwork in by first week of March and happily grandbaby #7 arrived. - Yes a little much.) This block took me quite some time because I kept messing up. I would get the triangles mess up and twisted around. That's a problem with having my layout board a ways from my sewing machine. But this quilt is going to be beautiful. Just look at this example! I am glad I got to work on it and contribute.

This next block was my first time ever paper piecing. Definitely a new challenge but it turned out good for my first time. I did have to take out a few seams and redo more than once but glad to have a great finished product.
I would love to do one of theses when it is my turn for the bee.

Favorite quilt to try...

I was able to attend the Tucson quilt show and fell in love with this fun quilt for a group of people. I would love to do this for my birthday with my daughters and beyond. So to help me remember the idea, I am posting it here to my quilt blog.

Quilting Bee Blocks

#7 J-Blue & #9 Simply Slade

I found a flickr group that was doing a modern sampler quilt along I decided to join. http://www.flickr.com/groups/modsamplerquiltalong/ (Just look at all these fun and yummy quilts!)

I loved all of the blocks, they were so fun. As I look through all the fun pictures of other peoples quilts, I found that I loved the back side of the quilt as much or more than the front side. I needed quilts for the boys in their room and I thought that these blocks would be the perfect touch of quilting and simplicity and look very manly at the same time. I took two sheets, a dark blue and a medium blue and cut those 1/3 by 2/3 for the front. I used my fabrics and made all the blocks for the mod sampler then we placed them all up on my design board and I let each boy choose a favorite block. We went around and around till they each had their choice of 7 blocks. I got the blocks in a strip and pieced in and then there they sat...waiting for me to finish. Christmas gave me the push to finish. Also at that time J was going to be getting a bigger bed than a twin size so I quickly used some of the leftover blocks and made his quilt wider. (I thought it was quite ingenious and a good thing I had more blocks.

I still have a few more blocks and plan to make some toss pillows for their beds....someday!

So what have I learned...... a quilt can have as much or as little piecing
as YOU want on it.
Go with what you like and want....that is right for YOU.
Maybe that is why I like to quilt....I can be my own boss and call my own shots.

#4 Piece o'Papa

I have been saving old jeans and shirts from Jon for awhile now and have wanted to make a quilt to enjoy using them. I saw the idea for 1/2 triangles with shirt strips that I thought would be fun to do. As I collected together the fabric scraps because they were mostly in the red and blue colors they made me think of Camille and her home. So I decided that for the Steven's picnic quilt it would right match. Rugged jeans (light and dark) and old boyish shirts for her male dominated family. Just for fun I threw in a fun fun extras (like the smiley fabric from a pillowcase she got for Christmas one year). I hope it brings fun memories for years to come, memories of home, memories of her dad (Papa Jon) and many new memories as used.

It makes me so happy...a place of honor in her home!

So what have I learned...... it's all about layout. This is made by the exact same block but the color of the jeans and the placement, make the design pop!!
And of course the fun dots on the border just make it fun!

#3 Redical ....dude!

This Christmas I wanted to do picnic quilts for the older kids but Kathryn already had a great one she had made. She had just moved into a big spacious home so I wanted to make a quilt for her home. Especially for her family room to be loved, used and cuddled with for many years to come. I enjoy looking on the Internet for ideas and I saw a picture of the back of someones quilt and loved it and knew I wanted to make one just like it (as the front - the real quilt). I backed it in cuddly corduroy with leftover scraps and quilted it with triangles.

So what have I learned......

Simplicity is powerful.
I love the simple blocks that look like they are inter-connected. It was so fun figuring out how to make this one as I only saw a picture. I can figure out things, it's fun to design things from scratch with only an idea and the guts to try!
You may be surprised at what you can do if only you will try.

Jenelle has been introducing me to a whole new world of trying to be a good and enjoy being a dog owner. She convinced us to let Kimree have these 2 Shih Tzu puppies for her birthday (responsibility, right?) Truthfully she enjoys these two dogs as much or more that Kimree does. So for Jene's picnic quilt it only seemed appropriate to make it using dog fabric and quilt it with dogs and bones. I used a simple pattern of denim blocks between a bordered dog block. Adding a fun rainbow strip (material used at Aunt Janel's wedding) that Jen had a dress out of as a child. Also this quilt is backed by an old sheet that Jenelle had on her bed as a child. So this quilt brings all kinds of memories. Bringing the old in touch with the new.

So what have I learned......
quilts are a fun way to re-use,
re-purpose and remember!

Celeste's Baby Quilt

Celeste is having a baby girl. For her shower I quickly made a baby quilt.
Pretty fun and bright colors to welcome her into the world. I forgot to take a picture earlier but we took it out of the gift bag and took a picture in the car on the way over to the shower...funny.

When I gave Celeste the quilt,
Erica noticed the rainbow fabric that I used and let me know she wants a quilt for her baby girl with some of that fabric in it. It is fabric used at her mother's wedding so that very appropriate to use and do for them.

Spring Duet

I am soooooooo pleased with how this quilt turned out.

Sometimes things just come together and this was one of those times.
I am so thankful. I had just got a new pattern that I was so anxious to use and make so I was searching my stash for fabric. The more solid like fabrics were left overs from another project and unbelievable they perfectly matched up to a set of 5 FQ's I already had!! How fortunate can I be. So I was off and sewing. After I had the middle pieced I was stuck with how to border it. I had finally decided after mulling and looking for awhile that I would just border it with a nice wide white border. A day or so later I happened to go shopping and picked up 1 little charm pack of a new line that caught my eye (though I had no idea how I was going to use it yet). I brought it home and looked through all the fun swatches and FELL IN LOVE with this fabric and knew it would be the perfect finishing border!!!

Reuse - Reuse

Lately I have been using up some old jeans - reusing them for new and wonderful things.
I am really liking how these are turning out.

This cute bag...
is a great way to use up and old pair of jeans.
I used pockets from the pants on both the front and the back.
It was so fun to make and I think will be even more fun to use.

I have also been making a picnic quilt out of old jeans and old shirts.

Scrappy Christmas Block Swap

We were each to make and send 2 Christmas blocks to our swap partner.
These are the terrific blocks that I made & received. I am so excited
about this wonderful Christmas quilt that soon will be finished.

I'm just going to add one more borders then it will be ready to quilt!!

I am so excited for Halloween. I saw this cute quilt idea in a local quilt shop and knew I had to make me one for my holiday display wall. It is such an easy idea with snowball blocks making the pumpkin heads and just appliqueing on a cute jack-o-lantern face. It look so fun hanging up. Mostly made with scraps
(I only had to buy the fall leaves border)

Favorite Quilt

Amy is hosting an amazing quilt festival and is asking people to share their favorite quilt. My favorites are not always the best for fanciest (this one is very simple) but based more on what I learned in the process. So here is the one I want to share about my journey in quilting.

Back at valentines, I fell in love with the valentines fabric line by moda "Love is in the Air". I wanted a special valentine feel for my holiday display area. The first thing I made didn't quite give the look or feel I wanted so this was try #2. I finally got it right. Quilting is always a creative process and not everyting turns out right but that is part of the challenge and beauty of it. This is what I wrote that I learned from this particular quilting experience....

Lesson Learned: Things often don't turn out how we imagined or wanted but, we can still enjoy the fruits of our labors. It may be in a different way but still to be enjoyed. Also if we will do just a bit more work, what we wanted and imagined can also happen too!

This is the original quilt. It is not that I don't like it, it's just not the look and feel I wanted for my diplay area. This will be a very loved and used quilt in my family room area. I named it "Looking for Love" and it reminds me to find and give love to everyone I see.

Here is a quick repentence....

I learned my daughter was pregnant with her 3rd about a month ago so I started making a possible quilt. Since she already has 2 boys I was secretly hoping for a girl for her. I was following a quilt group on flickr and they were making wonky block. I so wanted to join in the fun and make her a quiltthat way so I pulled and pulled all my pinks and got started. Of course we didn't know what she was having yet so it was a gamble. I had thought I would call the quilt "Power of Pink" if it was a girl and if not the quilt would be named "Pink Wishes".

Well...we found out today that she is having a boy. Yipee!
I also had some quick repentance to do lest she, her husband or this wonderful new baby boy would EVER think that I was not thrilled and absolutely excited about this new addition. So I quickly got to work TODAY and immediately made a new quilt...
This is called "Spot Alot" and fortunately I had a bunch 5 x 5 squares of a baby charm pack. All it is waiting for a some material for the outside border then I will be ready to quilt.

We are excited ....we (actually my daughter) is having another boy!!!

I finally finished one Bday gift on time. My d-d-in law's birthday was Sat. and I actually got her gift done. I had actually bought the charm pack months ago when I saw it because it just jumped out at me and looked liked something she would like. Of course I never got around to sewing it until a week before (my typical procrastination) and I was sweating about it because I was having major sewing machine problems but we got them fixed....just in the nick of time! whew!

Chelle's Bag - Finally Finished!!!

Well it took me long enough (just because I got lazy and didn't finish for 3 months) but I finally have it done and better yet SHE IS USING IT!!!

The fabric used for this has sentimental value. The main bag fabric was from her Nana and the button on the front was from her great grandma Ivie. So it has a touch of vintage (truly vintage for her personally). Also it is not too big and simple yet classic for my classic gal. I think her favorite part is that pocket on the front, just the right size for her cell phone.

Just because I haven't been posting it doesn't mean I haven't been sewing.
I have been busy trying to finish up a few WIP's. But even while I say that I have also distracted myself and have been starting a few.
I joined the 9 patch block a day quilt along and have been going to town on that. (the first 2 pictures are week one and week two)

I find I can't usually do just one a day so I have used it to help me finish a 9-patch that I had started before to get it finished and it is almost done....yipee!
This one is one color with white which makes for a very antique looking quilt except this one is brights! It is all the leftover scraps from from my Summerlicious Starbursts.

Online Quilt Festival

How fun and inspirational, Amy of Park City Girl's is having a Blogger's Quilt Festival. She asked for us to post a favorite quilt and blog about it.
I love quilts and learn something new each time I make one. But the quilt I chose to use is my daughters quilt that she made at age 9, last summer. She is now 10

She wanted to learn how to sew and make a quilt. Quite a big project but we had the summer ahead so away we went. She chose her favorite colors bright and happy pinks and purples. She had recently seen me make a bargello quilt and wanted something like that so away she went sewing long strips of each color together. She loved operating the sewing machine but getting the hang of sewing straight took a bit, but with every strip she got better and better. At first I sat with her and helped her guide but soon she was doing it all by herself. I realized as she was sewing it our original plan needed to be modified and simplified for her to feel successful and not frustrated. So she cut the strips into 3rds and swapped one and added sashing (so no matching seams) She also wanted to use our leftover strips and then added a border. We took her quilt over to her Aunt Jaime's house to quilt it. I think running the big quilting machine was right up her alley since running computers is not scary at all but second nature to her. She didn't let me touch it, except to help her pin it on to get her started.

I love the confidence she has gained from sewing this quilt. She has even told me that she is going to help me get some of my quilts tops quilted and finished. (I have a tendency to get the top done but have lots and lots of unfinished "flimsies")

Happy Birthday

Joyze had a birthday....unfortunately I was not here for it. In fact I didn't even get her gift done before I left town, but it is done now....Hooray!
It turned out fun and happy and oh so fitting for her. She wanted a nice big bag for toting all kinds of things around. (Of course in her favorite orange colors)

I had fun buying a few bright orange fat quarters, using blue fabric for the lining that I already had and filling it with an old blanket instead of buying the expensive iron-on fleece (it worked great)

Newspaper Riddle

This quilt was inspired and started by a trip to Tucson for a quilt show. Jaime invited me to join her going with a bus load of women headed to Tucson. It was fun and awesome to see all the quilts and all the quilting supplies available to buy. At the show I fell in love with this "Bento Box" Quilt pattern and was anxious to make one. I purchased a jelly roll of whites and blacks, used a red material in my stash and went to town sewing. It didn't turn out exactly like I had in my mind. My black and whites are not quite different enough from each other. My blacks needed to be stronger, darker blacks and my whites lighter whites, so the quilt didn't come off with quite the romantic feel I was going for but instead it has a funner lighter feel. So my unromantic quilt turned into a fun, frenzy of ........ what is black and white and red all over? The NEWPAPER RIDDLE!

Just My Luck

It is a brand new month, the year is zipping by so I need to take off my valentines stuff and get out some St. Patrick's day stuff. I knew it was coming so I started on a great green quilt. I pulled out all the misc. greens I had and started thinking. At first I was thinking only about using green but as I stewing over ideas in my head I saw a beautiful multi-colored Irish Chain quilt. Now I have always wanted to make an Irish Chain and what better time than for St. Patrick's. I had always seen an Irish Chain with 2 and sometimes 3 different fabrics but this one had a multi chain. So off I started. I wanted it very mish-mash with no planning so I sewed a white strip to any green strip (2 1/2 strip x about 21 inches -or whatever I had) then I cut those into 2 1/2" double blocks and started putting them together in 3's (with either an extra white or green block. Next made those into a 9 patch then pieced it all together with extra white squares. This is a really simple quilt but with stunning results.

Of course this is still a "flimsie" but I did get done the Table Topper I made to match which I am calling "Lucky Charm"

Lesson Learned: The thing I gain from this quilt is the importance of simple space (or solids) that is what makes this whole thing visually work. Space that lets the eyes rest and makes the color pattern POP out and SING at you. It all the colors were mushed up right next to each other all the time it would be so busy, but with the space it makes beautiful harmony. How we need our own space too. How much better we are to each other when we have space and time to be ourselves, to do things we enjoy alone and apart but then when we are together we are ready to pop and sing and just a much better person.

Bow Tucks Bag

I got to got to a class at Cutting Edge Quiltworks and learned to make Pat Sloan's Bow Tucks Bag. It was fun, Jaime and I got to go together and and we almost got completely done. I love my new bag. I used some fabric that I already had. A Black Denim material with believe it or not, purses stitched on it in a border at the bottom. A bright black, colorful multicolor. It's a fun finished project I am already using and enjoying!!

Journey of Life

This was a real fun project. I started with a scrap bag that I purchased. I wanted to make a zig zag quilt but I wanted to do easier piecing...so this is what I came up with....I took one scrap and sewed it to one long 4" by WOF piece of muslin or other light strip. Then after they were all sewn I cut them into triangles and they opened out to perfect 1/2 square triangle blocks.
This is how I put them all together. I could not bear to let the leftover end pieces go to waste so I sewed them together to make the hourglass blocks and added them as a border on the bottom and top.

I call this my "Journey of Life" because of all the up's and downs and twists and turn that come to us in our lives. But look at how beautiful and wonderfull the tapestry of our life looks like when we can see the whole picture not just our current triumph or trial that we are in the middle of right now.

Looking for Love

For Valentines I fell in love with a beautiful set of fabric. It was " Love is in the Air" by Moda. Being the frugal (OK cheap) person that I am I couldn't bring myself to buy more that one charm pack and 1 yard of 1 fabric to enjoy but I wanted a whole quilt for my holiday display wall. So I looked around at what I had - some great red material and came up with a pattern to use (one I had done before (my "Parlor Windows" that I originally got from AP&Quilting Mag. Apr 2008 Dandelion wished ***this was my first Quilting magazine and my first project from a Magazine). Sew, sew, sew and this is what I came up with.

BUT....while I liked the pattern, fabric and quilt, it came out too dark. Not the "Valentine feel that I was wanting. I did love the little table topper that I made using the leftover fabrics. It did fell very "love like".

So I had to try it one more time....one more charm pack. I went a bought one more charm pack, not sure what pattern I would use and lo, and behold in the store they had hanging on their wall a quilt that was just the look I wanted. They let me take a picture of it. So I went home figured it out and made it!! I love it, it is just what I wanted. The only thing left is to add a great red border then brown border and quilt it. I couldn't wait so here it is displayed with my holiday display wall. Notice the cute Valentine notes of Love that A&M family gave us - perfect!

All (meaning my first quilt) is not lost because I did find I love it in the family room on the lazyboy...so it has a great home. Now if I just get these all quilted for next valentines - I will be prepared!! Another bonus is we will get to use it and not just view it. I am sooooo pleased!

Heidi's Patriotic Quilt

A great and fun way to use up old jeans in a pretty
way.

Heidi wanted to make a quilt that was
very
patriotic
for her mother.

They were having a suprise patriotic birthday party, so Heidi made her first quilt. It was fun to watch her cut out the jeans for the blocks. She wanted to make sure to have some nice frayed knees (because her mother hates ripped knees) and some fun pockets (maybe to tuck a sweet suprise in). Heidi found some great fabric with the each of the armed forces seals that we just had to use. Her mom served in the Canadian Navy, her Dad served in the army (they were both stationed in Germany when they they met and married then Heidi grew up an "army brat" as her Dad continued to serve. Of course the colors are red - white and blue with demin (in blues and creams) and fun printed reds. The quilting specially spotlighted stars. With the leftover armed forces seals we made a fun pillowcase to use with the quilt. Heidi did a great job!!

Kimree's Krumbs

After being at least a year since I pieced the top - I FINALLY HAVE IT DONE, QUILTED AND BOUND.

?? Experiment Table Square

This was a fun experiment with scraps. I found this pattern in www.quiltville.com. I decided to try it out with just the scraps I had in my 2" strip drawer...

Lesson Learned: Both the need for good 1/4" seams. Since I love to sew with the serger all my seams are bigger than 1/4" which doesn't usually matter enough for me because ALL my seams are bigger but in this pattern it really throws off the size and strips. The other thing I learned or at least need to learn about is how to correctly add borders. I need to measure across the middle then cut the borders that size because I just started sewing them on and because all my blocks are on the bias it stretched and waves now. It is a good thing I was learning all these things on a practice piece not some HUGE project that I really cared about and mattered.

Parlor Windows

Scrap-twist Scrapper

Sometimes you've got to just use up some old fabric from the stash (especially past projects) I found this great website that
specializes

in scrappy quilts and fell in love with this particular pattern (click here). I just had to make one with my drawer of 2 1/2" scraps. I love how it turned out. I love the magic movement that happens as you sew the blocks together.
I really love how fun it is to use now that it is finished!!! We keep this in the family room always ready to use.

Bela's Bow's........Finished Finally!

With the holidays hitting I was just overwhelmed and didn't get Bela's quilt all finished until after the new year. But I hope she will think it's worth the wait. I LOVE IT. This is the 3rd of my experiment of Bow Tie Blocks. The first for Logan, had basic blocks all blues, two colors per block. The 2nd for Mason was still in all blues but 3 colors per block to mix it up a bit. Now this one is just plain bright and fun. Any color goes and both 2 & 3 color blocks. I arranged them around and around, each ring with it's own kind and added a few bows for fun to help fit the quilt name of "Bela's Bows". The quilt is backed by a bright and super soft orange fabric ready to cuddle in.

Birthday Wishes

Baby Bargello (for Melina)

This is my first experiment with a Bargello quilt.
It is a fun one to make.
You sew strips together into a big block,
Then you sew that block into a tube.
Then you slice the tube into strips.
One seam of the tube is unpicked and you sew them together.

Love Blooms

Happy Anniversary!!!
OK it's a bit late but this is our 30th Anniversary Quilt.
We went out-of-town for the weekend before so on Monday (our actually anniversary day) I had a free day, that of course I didn't want to do anything I usually do and especially not any housework. So I escaped to make us a quilt for our bed. I had recently purchase a small jelly roll of strips in fun colors that I couldn't resist. I looked around in my stash and found a sparkly maroon that I liked with it and I was off. I really didn't have a pattern in mind but just started making block. I took 8 1/2" block out of the maroon and sewed the strips to the outside. After I got all those sewed the next step was to figure out how I was going to place them, straight or on point and what in between. I decided for simple and straight with just a plain block of dark green (from a bolt I had from a possible upholstery project. And I was going to town. I got a lot of it done. In the next few days I just had to pick out my favorite 4 prints to buy and add for borders and then off to Jaime's to quilt it with a wonderful flower stitch, going along with my love blooms quilt.

Lesson learned:
Love does bloom just like quilts. Sometimes we don't know exactly what we will get or end up with. We make a decision, choose our mate then we just jump in whole-heartedly. We make decisions as we go, keep working and working and working. Giving our all and doing the best with what we have. Bordering it all with lots of love, adding a little spice & sparkle or highlighting the favorite parts here and there. Behold we look back at the whole picture after 30 years of love and hard work and say WOW! Look what we have done and look at where and how our love has bloomed!!

Quilting for Service - a family affair

One summer we were very busy making quilts for service. The need was for fun happy quilts for children. Many people got together and drew on white blocks (backed temporarily with freezer paper) fun happy pictures to put on our quilts. We just used regular crayons and then ironed the colors into the fabric to make it permanent (Make sure to use paper bags under and on top of the fabric)

We volunteered to sew them together into quilt tops. One of my daughters volunteered to make some from scratch, completely into quilts. She had each of her cousins and sibling to color at least one block. Then she put them together and we tie quilted them.

These quilt tops made us happy and we worked on these fun bright happy colors. We hope that all the children who received them felt happy and loved as they got to use and enjoy their quilts.

Twisted Joy

It's quilted, its bound, it's done!!!
I have been hoping and thinking that life would settle down so I could get some quilting done, but I never was fitting it in. I talked to A-J and she had a slice of time between her big quilting projects on the quilter and DD-6 was home from school for October Break, so we decided to jump at the chance and squeeze it in too.
We finally broke away some time and got it done. DD-6 and I went over today to Aunt J's and got her quilt for her bed finished. It's amazing what a finishing touch the quilting does, it helps to blend and makes it oh so huggable. DD-6 chose out a fun twisty meandering quilt pattern that just fits this quilt. The center blocks are pattern called "Twisted Sister". The outer strips are just a way to use up the leftovers and make the quilted bigger to fit a twin bed. A fun way to use up the scraps. This quilted I have named to be "Twisted Joy!"

Lesson learned: We is never really time to do these things, we just need to plan, squeeze it in and get it done anyways!

Kimree's Quilting

Kimree has been watching me all year work on quilt after quilt in any of the spare moments I have. She asked me if she could make one and I jumped at the chance. What a great way to learn how to sew. I decided it would be easiest to sew long strips together and then cut and rearrange and resew. So we started to sew. At first it was slow going, she would sit in front of me and I would be in back but she wanted me to help hold and help her guide all the time. She would control the presser foot and the speed but she wanted my help for the rest. But strip after strip she improved, getting better and better, her confidence grew and pretty soon she was sewing on her own. I realized while we were sewing these strips, I better come up with a slightly easier plan or pattern, what I had in my head would take too many matching sections and this would frustrate her and ruin her confidence in sewing on her own so I just decided to cut our rectangle of strips into 3 pieces and put sashing strips in between so then we had no matching seams at all. (whew...much better!)

Wow Kimree's quilt turned out great!!!

Then we were able to take it over to Aunt Jaimes house and quilt it. Kimree is a real technology baby, because she was very comfortable working this big quilting machine. Just put her at the computer and she goes to town (She wouldn't let me touch it)

The other night as I tucked her into bed, under her beautiful quilt, I mentioned I needed to get some of mine finished and she said "I can help you get yours done".

Think Outside the Box

One thing I truly love about quilting is being able to think outside the box (or square). Thinking outside the box is what quilting is all about and what makes each quilt so wonderful and beautiful. Recently I ran across a great pattern (on the internet ..click here)that taught this fun easy 3 seam pattern for making 3-D bow tie blocks. I tried it once and was hooked, what a fun simple block to make...so easy and fast! So I proceeded to make a whole group of scrap blue and white blocks using up lots of my stash. When I got a group of them done my oldest daughter suggested "what would it look like if you sewed a 3rd fabric in the center" I thought that sounded great so then a whole new group of blocks began to appear. What fun!!! These two groups of blocks made into some darling beautiful quilts for grandbaby-4 (a boy) and grandbaby-5 (a boy) which I am giving to them on their birthday.

Lesson Learned...Think outside the box (or blocks)! The same block with exactly the same fabrics looks totally different when mixed up a bit. There is more than one way to do things and both are great!

And if you think these are fun...just wait till you see the next one for grandbaby-6 (a girl) It is in progress and will look even more different and will use both types of block - the 2 color and the 3 color. I can't wait!!!

Simply Beautiful

Back in 2000 the 3 boys were upstairs in our "blue room" so I first made a quilt for Son-1, then did one for Son-2 then finally this one for Son-3. Of all of these 3 quilts I think this one is my favorite. The pattern is very simple but very striking. A great example that simple is beautiful, striking and often best.
(This quilt was done in 2002)

Lesson Learned: I think maybe I need to simplify my life. Focus a little more on a few things and do them well and beautifully so the threads of my life can be woven into a striking simple tapestry, filled with the most important things

Dont Change - Do what YOU love now!

This was my first major quilt project. I started this back in 1982. I wanted to make a beautiful quilt for our bed. I purchased all the material and planned on doing a log cabin quilt using Eleanor Burns "Quilt in a Day" book. I was so excited I was doing it in blues and pinks a great blending of my husbands and my favorite colors. Right as I was starting to work on it I realized that when I got it finished when I put it in our bedroom, it wouldn't match the rest of the decore. Specifically I was worried about matching a rocking chair that I had just recently re-upolshtered in a rust colored fabric. I thought if I would just change my plans a little I could match my rocking chair and make the quilt for our room and still love it. So 3 of the fabrics I changed to be rust instead of rose and maroon colors. And off I went sewing away, getting my quilt done. After I got the blocks all pieced I laid the blocks on my bed to get the arrangement and realized it was nice but I no longer LOVED it.
I kind of fizzled out in excitement to finish it for 2 reasons
1. I realized all this work MUST be quilted, it wouldn't be good enough to tie it (it wouldn't do it justice) and since I hate hand sewing that was a big, big deterant and
2. I really really missed those colors that I had first bought and planned to use, everytime I looked at it I think, I wish I would have....
So the blocks sat and sat and sat for years unfinished. Finally about 12 years later, I finally drag it out and sewed it all together and placed the borders around it into an unfinished flimsy, still not sure what I will ever do with it when I do get it finished because it doesn't match anything in my room anymore and I would probably never put it on the bed to use. So what do I do?? We do use it once every year at christmas time when we get it out and pin it across the hallway over the entrance to our parlor where the Christmas tree sits hiding from enquiring eyes what Santa brought on Christmas morning until we are all fed and ready to go in together.

So what have I learned......
Don't change to match (especially a piece of furniture that I have long since changed and re-upholstered too). It is important to make and do what sings to your soul NOW, so you can enjoy it NOW. It is important to fill our homes and especially our bedrooms with things that we LOVE and enjoy NOW. We probably will change things later but that is OK we need to sing OUR SONG NOW!

I have always loved quilts of every kind.

This is not a quilt I made, just one I love

Whenever I see a beautiful quilt, it makes my heart sing.

Over the years I have dabbled in quilt making. Actually to be perfectly correct I have dabble more in piecing and making "flimsies" as I have heard a quilt top that is pieced but not yet quilted and finished called. I have really enjoyed all that I am learning about quilting and about life. It seems that each time I finish a quilt, I learn something new, something that applies not only to quilting and sewing but also to life. This blog is where I am going to share about projects I am working on and also what I am learning as I sew.
